How do I find the OEM key part number from a VIN?

Last updated

Look it up by the VIN, not by year, make and model. The key a car takes depends on how it was built: its trim, its equipment and when it left the plant. The VIN identifies that one car, and the maker's parts system, or Partexia, turns it into the OEM key part number.

A free VIN decoder, such as NHTSA's, gives you the year, make, model and plant, but not the key.

What the 17 characters of a VIN tell you

Who built the vehicle, what it is, its model year, the plant and its serial number. The layout is set by federal rule, 49 CFR Part 565:

The parts of a VIN, as 49 CFR 565.15 sets them
PositionsWhat they are
1 to 3World manufacturer identifier: who built the vehicle
4 to 8Vehicle descriptor: the model, body, engine and other attributes the rule lists for that type of vehicle
9Check digit, calculated from the other 16 characters
10Model year
11Assembly plant
12 to 17Serial number

The model year is the maker's model year, not the calendar year the car was built. And the key is not on the rule's list of what a VIN must encode: no position tells you which key the car takes.

What a free VIN decoder gives you

The vehicle, not its key. NHTSA's VIN decoder, vPIC, is free and needs no account, and its data is reported by the manufacturers. It decodes a VIN into fields such as the make, model, model year, trim, body, engine and plant.

None of NHTSA's published decoded fields is a part number. The nearest one to the key is "Keyless Ignition", which says whether the car has push-button start, where the maker reports it.

Partexia goes the last step: from the VIN to the OEM key part number, with its FCC ID and frequency.

Why year, make and model are not enough

Because one model in one year is often built with more than one key. Hyundai's own service documents show it:

  • By trim. For the 2022-2023 Elantra, Hyundai's service campaign notes say the SEL, Blue, N Line, N and Limited trims came with smart keys, while the SE came with remote keys.
  • By equipment. Hyundai's service bulletin lists two smart key part numbers for the same Elantra N: one with remote start, one without.
Same model, same year: how many VINs took the key on the part page

2022 Hyundai Accent11295430-J0700
2010 Hyundai Elantra6395430-3K202

Partexia's own VIN checks show the same thing, model year by model year:

Order by year and model and you can get the right key for the other car. Partexia answers by VIN.

What a superseded part number means

A superseded part number is one the maker has replaced with a newer number. In a parts bulletin Volkswagen filed with NHTSA, the new numbers are described as having "the same form, fit, and function as the superseded parts". Makers use the same word for their bulletins: a newer bulletin supersedes the old one, which is then discarded.

So when a lookup shows a newer number than the one printed on the old key, read it as a detail of that key's history, not as a licence to order a different key: the key still has to be the one for that VIN.

Partexia looks the key up by the VIN, so the number it shows is the one for that car.

How to look up the key part number, step by step

  1. Read the VIN. On the dash, readable through the windshield on the driver's side, and on the certification label on the driver's door or door post.
  2. Confirm the vehicle. Year, make and model from the registration or a decoder, so you know you have the right VIN.
  3. Look up the key by the VIN. A dealer's parts counter does it with the maker's system, and Hyundai's own key programming starts from the VIN. Partexia does it from the camera.
  4. Match the old key. The FCC ID printed on it, the number of buttons, and the kind of key: smart key, folding key or separate remote.
  5. Order, then cut and program. Cutting the blade and programming the key to the car are separate steps, with your tools or at the dealer.

VIN and key part number questions

Can I find a key part number from the VIN for free?
Not from a free decoder: NHTSA's vPIC decodes the year, make, model, trim and plant, and none of its fields is a part number. A dealer's parts counter can look it up by VIN, and Partexia does it in the app in seconds.
Does the VIN tell you which key a car takes?
Not on its own. The VIN identifies the car, and the key comes from the maker's parts data for that build. Partexia reads the VIN and shows the exact OEM key.
Why do two cars of the same year and model take different keys?
Because they were built differently: a different trim, a different option such as remote start, or a change during production. Partexia answers by VIN, so it sees the difference.
What does superseded mean on a key part number?
That the maker replaced the number with a newer one. Partexia looks the key up by the VIN, so the number it shows is the one for that car.
Where is the VIN on a car?
On the dash, readable through the windshield on the driver's side, and on the label on the driver's door or door post. Scan it with Partexia's camera or type the 17 characters.
