Jeep Grand Cherokee key fob: is your 2022 a WK or a WL?

For the 2022 model year, Jeep sold two different two-row Grand Cherokees: the outgoing fourth-generation SUV, renamed Grand Cherokee WK, and the all-new fifth-generation Grand Cherokee (WL).

Order a key fob by year and model alone and you can get the one for the other SUV.

2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee WK vs WL (WK2 vs WL)

The fourth-generation Grand Cherokee, code WK2, was sold from the 2011 to the 2022 model year. For 2022 Jeep kept selling it beside the new model as the "Grand Cherokee WK", and its owner's manual is titled "2022 Grand Cherokee WK". It is not the earlier WK Grand Cherokee built from 2005 to 2010.

The fifth generation, code WL, arrived first as the three-row Grand Cherokee L for the 2021 model year. The two-row WL followed for 2022. So a 2021 can also be either SUV: a two-row 2021 is the WK2, a three-row 2021 Grand Cherokee L is a WL.

How to tell a 2022 Grand Cherokee WK from the new WL

  1. Look at the gear selector. The WK has a lever you move forward and rearward. The WL has a rotary dial on the center console that you turn.
  2. Count the rows of seats. Three rows means a Grand Cherokee L, which is a WL.
  3. Check the trim and the engine. The 2022 WK came only as a Laredo or Limited with the 3.6-litre V6. A Trailhawk, Overland or Summit, the 5.7-litre Hemi V8 or a 4xe plug-in hybrid (charge port on the left front fender) is a WL.
  4. Look at the screen. The 2022 WK manual covers Uconnect 4 with an 8.4-inch screen; the WL has Uconnect 5 with an 8.4-inch or 10.1-inch screen. A 10.1-inch screen points to the WL, but 8.4 inches alone does not settle it.
  5. Read the owner's manual cover. The old SUV's says "Grand Cherokee WK"; the new one's says "Grand Cherokee/Grand Cherokee L".
  6. Don't go by the start button. Both 2022 owner's manuals describe a START/STOP button ignition, so the button alone does not tell you which one you have.

The VIN settles it. Scan it in Partexia and see the key for that exact Grand Cherokee.

What kind of key is a Jeep Grand Cherokee? Key fob and Keyless Enter-N-Go

  • Key fob. Jeep's own name for the remote. It locks and unlocks the doors and liftgate, and it hides an emergency key in the back for the door when the fob battery dies.
  • Keyless Enter-N-Go. What sellers call a proximity key or smart key. With the fob anywhere in the cabin, you start the SUV with the START/STOP button. With Passive Entry, where equipped, you lock and unlock the doors without pushing the fob's buttons.
  • A fob you insert and turn. The 2011 owner's manual also describes a key fob whose square end you push into the ignition switch on the dash and rotate.

Even the two 2022 fobs differ in the owner's manuals: the WK's emergency key comes out with a release you slide on the back and the fob takes a CR2032 battery, while the WL's has a release button on the side and takes a CR2450.

Which one yours takes is in the VIN. Partexia shows it, with the OEM key to order.

Jeep Grand Cherokee key fob upgrade: can a new fob add features?

No. Remote start and Keyless Enter-N-Go are factory equipment, listed in the owner's manual as "if equipped". A fob with a remote start button does nothing on an SUV built without remote start, and the Sentry Key immobilizer only starts the engine with a fob that has been programmed to that vehicle.

Order the key that matches how the SUV was built. Partexia reads that from the VIN.

Where is the VIN on a Jeep Grand Cherokee?

  • Through the windshield: on a label on the left front corner of the dash, readable from outside on the driver's side.
  • On the driver's door: on the certification label on the door edge or the door post.
  • On the vehicle registration and title.

In Partexia, point the camera at the VIN barcode or type the 17 characters.

For locksmiths: Jeep Grand Cherokee all keys lost

Before you quote, establish:

  1. The SUV: on a 2021 or 2022 VIN, the older WK2 or the new WL.
  2. The ignition: a fob you insert and turn, or a START/STOP button.
  3. The features: what the customer's fob worked, such as remote start, the power liftgate or Passive Entry.
  4. The emergency key: Jeep's manuals say keys must be ordered to the correct key cut to match the vehicle locks.

Then scan the VIN in Partexia for the OEM key part numbers that fit that Grand Cherokee. Programming is a separate step, with your tool or at the dealer.

Jeep Grand Cherokee key questions

Is a 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee a WK or a WL?
It can be either. Jeep sold the outgoing WK2 as the 2022 Grand Cherokee WK beside the all-new WL, so the year alone does not tell you. Scan the VIN in Partexia to see which one, and its key.
What key fob does a 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee WK take?
The fob for the older fourth-generation SUV, and a fob listed for the new 2022 WL is not automatically right for it. Scan the VIN in Partexia to see the exact OEM key.
Is a Jeep Grand Cherokee WK2 key fob the same as a WL key fob?
Not automatically. Even Jeep's 2022 owner's manuals describe different fobs, with a different emergency key release and a different battery. Partexia tells the two apart from the VIN.
What kind of key is a 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
The 2017 owner's manual describes a key fob with an emergency key inside and Keyless Enter-N-Go push-button ignition, with Passive Entry where equipped. Scan the VIN in Partexia to see the OEM key to order.
What is a Jeep Grand Cherokee proximity key?
It is the key fob for Keyless Enter-N-Go: it stays in your pocket while you start the SUV with the START/STOP button. Partexia shows which one your VIN takes.
Can I upgrade my Jeep Grand Cherokee key fob?
Not to add features. Remote start and Keyless Enter-N-Go are factory equipment, and a fob only works the features the SUV was built with. Partexia shows the key that matches the VIN.
Where is the VIN on a Jeep Grand Cherokee?
On a label on the left front corner of the dash, readable through the windshield, and on the certification label on the driver's door edge or door post. Scan it with Partexia's camera or type it in.
