Nissan Rogue key fob: is yours a Rogue Select, and which key does it take?

For the 2014 and 2015 model years, Nissan sold two different vehicles with the Rogue name: the previous-generation Rogue, renamed Rogue Select, and the all-new second-generation Rogue.

Order a key by year and "Rogue" alone and you can get the one for the other vehicle.

What is a 2014 Nissan Rogue Select?

When Nissan redesigned the Rogue for 2014, it kept selling the previous-generation Rogue under the new "Rogue Select" nameplate, as a simpler, lower-priced choice. The Rogue Select came in one trim, the Rogue Select S, and was built in Kyushu, Japan; the all-new 2014 Rogue was built in Smyrna, Tennessee. 2015 was the Rogue Select's last year.

The Rogue Select is the first-generation Rogue that started with the 2008 model year. The new Rogue is the second generation, sold for 2014 through 2020; the third generation followed for 2021.

The Rogue Sport, sold for 2017 through 2022, is a third vehicle: a slightly smaller crossover, the US name for the Nissan Qashqai. A key listed for a Rogue Sport is not automatically right for a Rogue.

2014 Nissan Rogue Select vs Rogue: how to tell them apart

  1. Look for a START button. Nissan's 2014 Rogue Select owner's manual describes a master key that you turn in the ignition switch and a separate keyfob for the locks, with no Intelligent Key. A 2014-2015 Rogue with a push button ignition switch is the new Rogue.
  2. Count the seat rows. The Rogue Select was a five-passenger vehicle. The new 2014 Rogue offered optional third-row seating, so a third row means the new Rogue.
  3. Don't go by a key you turn. On the new Rogue the Intelligent Key came on the SV and SL trims, and its owner's manual also lists a jackknife key you turn. A turn key alone does not tell you which Rogue you have.

The VIN settles it. Scan it in Partexia and see the key for that exact vehicle.

What kind of key is a Nissan Rogue? Intelligent Key, jackknife key or master key

  • Intelligent Key. Nissan's smart key. It stays in your pocket, and with it inside the vehicle you start the engine with the push button ignition switch.
  • Jackknife key. A keyfob with a key blade that folds out when you press the release button. You turn it in the ignition switch.
  • Master key. The Rogue Select's key: a metal key with a transponder in its head that you turn in the ignition, used with a separate keyfob.

Nissan's owner's manuals for the 2014 and 2019 Rogue list both the Intelligent Key and the jackknife key, each "if so equipped", so the same model year was built with either.

Nissan's recall report says the jackknife key stopped being made once the Intelligent Key was adopted into Rogue production in 2020. The 2021 Rogue owner's manual describes the Intelligent Key with a mechanical key inside.

Which one yours takes is in the VIN. Partexia shows it, with the OEM key to order.

Nissan Rogue emergency key and dead Intelligent Key battery

  • The emergency key is inside. Nissan calls it the mechanical key. Release the lock knob on the back of the Intelligent Key to pull it out, and use it to lock or unlock the driver's door.
  • Starting with a dead Intelligent Key battery: put the shift in P (Park), press the brake firmly, touch the ignition switch with the Intelligent Key until a chime sounds, then push the ignition switch with the brake pressed within 10 seconds.
  • Buttons dead, but the door handle request switch works? A Nissan service bulletin for the 2016-2019 Rogue says the Intelligent Key may have become de-synchronized, for example after a low battery is replaced, and that no parts should be replaced if it only needs re-synchronizing.

Nissan Rogue push to start key: can a new fob add it?

No. The Intelligent Key with push button ignition is factory equipment: on the 2014 Rogue it came on the SV and SL trims, and the owner's manuals list the push button ignition switch and remote engine start as "if so equipped". A Rogue built with an ignition switch you turn starts with a key you insert and turn.

Order the key that matches how the vehicle was built. Partexia reads that from the VIN.

Where is the VIN on a Nissan Rogue?

  • Through the windshield: on the left front corner of the dash, readable from outside on the driver's side.
  • On the driver's door: on the certification label on the door edge or the door post.
  • On the vehicle registration and title.

In Partexia, point the camera at the VIN barcode or type the 17 characters.

For locksmiths: Nissan Rogue all keys lost

Before you quote, establish:

  1. The vehicle: Rogue or Rogue Sport, and on a 2014-2015 VIN, Rogue Select or the new Rogue.
  2. The ignition: a key you turn or the push button ignition switch.
  3. The key number plate: Nissan supplies one with the keys and does not record key numbers, so ask the customer if they still have it.
  4. Every key that still exists: Nissan's manuals say registering keys erases the codes of all previously registered keys, so any key not there at registration will no longer start the vehicle.

A jackknife key that folds on its own may be covered by Nissan recall 23V-093, which applies to S grade 2014-2020 Rogue and 2017-2022 Rogue Sport vehicles with a jackknife key.

Then scan the VIN in Partexia for the OEM key part numbers that fit that vehicle. Programming is a separate step, with your tool or at the dealer.

What key fob does a 2014 Nissan Rogue Select take?
Nissan's 2014 Rogue Select owner's manual describes a master key you turn in the ignition and a separate keyfob, not an Intelligent Key. It is the previous-generation Rogue, so a key listed for the new 2014 Rogue is not automatically right for it. Scan the VIN in Partexia to see the exact OEM key.

What is the Nissan Rogue Intelligent Key?

How do I start a Nissan Rogue with a dead key fob?

Rogue or Rogue Sport, Rogue Select or new Rogue on a 2014-2015 VIN, turn key or push button ignition, and whether the customer still has the key number plate. Then scan the VIN in Partexia for the OEM key part numbers.
