Does my car have push-button start?
If there is a START/STOP or ENGINE START STOP button on the dash, yes, and the car takes a smart key that stays in your pocket. If you put a key or a fob in a slot and turn it, no.
The year and model do not settle it. Many models were sold with and without push-button start in the same model year, depending on how each car was built.
How to check if your car has push-button start
- Look at the dash. A button marked START/STOP or ENGINE START STOP near the steering wheel is push-button start.
- Think about how you start it. If the key never leaves your pocket or bag, the car has push-button start. If you push a key or a fob into a slot and turn it, it has a turn-key ignition.
- Don't go by the owner's manual alone. A manual covers every way a model was built, so a push-button start section marked "if equipped" does not mean your car has it.
Which cars have push-button start? Often only some of them
Push-button start is often equipment on some cars of a model and not others, in the same year. Toyota's quick reference guides for the 2016, 2020 and 2025 Camry each cover cars with the Smart Key System and cars without it. The 2019 Nissan Rogue owner's manual covers both a turn-key ignition switch and push-button start. Ram sold the Ram 1500 with a twist ignition and with Keyless Enter-N-Go push-button start.
So "does a 2020 Camry have push-button start?" has two answers, and only the car itself, or its VIN, gives the right one.
Partexia reads from the VIN how the car was built, and shows the key that goes with it.

What push-button start means for your key
A push-button start car only starts with its smart key inside. Toyota's guide puts it this way: "The Smart Key must be carried to enable the start function."
Scan the VIN in Partexia to see which smart key or key the car takes.
How to start a push-button car with a dead key fob
A flat fob battery does not leave you stranded. The makers build in a fallback, and it is in the owner's manual:
- Honda: press ENGINE START/STOP, then, while it flashes, touch the remote to the button, and press the button with your foot on the brake.
- Nissan: touch the ignition switch with the Intelligent Key while pressing the brake pedal, then press the switch.
- Ford: put the key in the backup slot, which is in the console storage, the cup holder or another spot depending on the model.
Then replace the fob battery soon: the fallback is there to get you going, not for every day.
