Smart key vs Fobik vs transponder: which key does my car take?
The ignition tells you the kind. A START/STOP button means a smart key that stays in your pocket. A slot you put the key in and turn means a transponder key or, on a Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep or Ram, often a Fobik.
The kind is only half the answer. The same model in the same year was often built with more than one kind, and the right key is the one made for that exact vehicle.
How to tell which kind of key your car takes
- Look for a START/STOP button. If the car starts with a button on the dash while the key stays in your pocket or bag, it takes a smart key.
- No button? Look at what goes in the ignition. A plastic fob with no metal blade that you push into a slot on the dash and turn is a Fobik. A metal key you turn is a transponder key.
- Look at the buttons on the key. Lock, unlock, trunk or remote start buttons are the remote part. They tell you what the new key must do, not which kind it is.
The VIN settles which key the vehicle was built with. Partexia shows it, with the OEM key to order.
What is a transponder key?
A key with an electronic circuit in it that the car reads when you turn the ignition. The car's immobilizer checks the key's code, and if it does not recognize the code, the engine will not run.
That is why a key cut to fit the lock can open the door and still not start the car: it also has to be a key the car has registered. Nissan's owner's manual puts it plainly: "You cannot start the engine with an unregistered key."
What is a Fobik?
Fobik is Chrysler's name for a fob-integrated key: the remote and the key in one plastic body, with no blade to cut. Chrysler's recall filings spell it out as Frequency Operated Button Ignition Key, on vehicles from the Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger to the Jeep Grand Cherokee.
On a twist ignition you push its square end into the ignition switch on the dash and turn it.
A Fobik hides an emergency key inside, for the door when the fob battery dies.

What is a smart key (proximity key)?
A smart key stays in your pocket: you unlock, lock and start the car without taking it out, and you start the engine with the START/STOP button. Each maker has its own name for the system:
- Toyota: Smart Key System.
- Honda: Smart Entry.
- Nissan: Intelligent Key.
- Ford: Intelligent Access.
- Ram: Keyless Enter-N-Go.
Smart keys carry a mechanical emergency key blade, usually hidden inside the fob, for the door when the battery is flat.
Smart key vs regular key: one model, more than one key
Year and model are not enough to know the kind. Toyota's own quick reference guides for the 2016, 2020 and 2025 Camry describe cars with the Smart Key System and cars without it, and the 2019 Nissan Rogue owner's manual covers both a turn-key ignition switch and push-button start.
Ram did the same with the Ram 1500: in the same model year, one truck takes a Fobik and the next a smart key.
Which one a car has is in its VIN. Partexia reads it and shows the OEM key.

Before you order a replacement key
- The kind: smart key, Fobik or transponder key, from the ignition.
- The buttons: to keep remote start or the tailgate, the replacement needs the same buttons your old key had.
- The VIN: the one thing that tells two cars of the same year and model apart.
Scan the VIN in Partexia for the OEM key that fits. Programming the key to the car is a separate step, with a locksmith's tool or at the dealer.
Car key type questions
- What kind of key does my car have?
- Check the ignition. A START/STOP button means a smart key; a slot you turn a key in means a transponder key or, on many Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram vehicles, a Fobik. For the exact key, scan the VIN in Partexia.
- Is a Fobik a smart key?
- Not the same thing. A Fobik goes into the ignition slot and turns; a smart key stays in your pocket and works with the START/STOP button. Partexia shows which one a VIN takes.
- What is the difference between a smart key and a regular key?
- A regular transponder key goes in the ignition and turns, and the car reads its code as you turn it. A smart key never leaves your pocket: the car finds it and you press START/STOP. Scan the VIN in Partexia to see which one your car takes.
- Can a key cut to fit my lock start the car?
- It can open the door, but the immobilizer only lets the engine run with a key it has registered. Partexia shows the OEM key to order for the VIN.
- What kind of key does a Toyota Camry take?
- It depends on how that Camry was built: Toyota sold Camrys with and without the Smart Key System in the same model years. Scan the VIN in Partexia to see which key, and the OEM part to order.
