Chevrolet Silverado 1500 key fob: is your 2019 an LD, or your 2022 an LTD?

Twice, Chevrolet sold two different trucks as the same model year of Silverado 1500. In 2019 the previous-generation truck stayed on sale as the Silverado LD beside the all-new truck. In 2022 the pre-refresh truck stayed on sale as the Silverado 1500 LTD beside the refreshed one.

Order a key by year and model alone and you can get the one for the other truck.

2019 Silverado LD and 2022 Silverado LTD: what they are

2019: GM marketed the outgoing light-duty truck as the Silverado LD, sold beside the all-new 2019 Silverado 1500. The LD is the third-generation truck that started with the 2014 model year; the new truck is the fourth generation. Chevrolet called the LD "a continuation run of the current generation pickup", and its production ended in December 2019.

2022: the refreshed Silverado 1500 arrived later in the 2022 model year, so Chevrolet kept building the 2021-design truck as the 2022 Silverado 1500 LTD, short for Limited. It is not a luxury trim: the name marks the early 2022 trucks, and it came in trims from the base WT up to High Country.

GMC did the same with the Sierra: the 2019 Sierra Limited and the 2022 Sierra 1500 Limited.

2019 Silverado old vs new body style: how to tell an LD

  1. Look at the cab. GM's order guide listed the LD only as a Double Cab, the cab with the smaller rear doors, with a standard box. A 2019 Double Cab is the one to check closely.
  2. Look at the trim badge. The LD came only in work-truck and LT trims. A 2019 RST, LTZ or High Country is the new truck.
  3. Compare it with a 2018. The LD is the same generation as the 2014-2018 Silverado 1500, so it looks like one.

On a Double Cab WT or LT, the VIN settles it. Scan it in Partexia and see the key for that exact truck.

2022 Silverado 1500 LTD vs the refreshed 2022

  1. Look at the front. Every trim of the refreshed 2022 got a new front fascia and grille with lower headlamps. The LTD keeps the 2021 face.
  2. Look at the dash on an LT or above. The refreshed LT, RST, LT Trail Boss, ZR2, LTZ and High Country got a redesigned interior with a 13.4-inch touchscreen. An LTD keeps the 2021 dash.
  3. Don't go by the interior on a work truck. The redesigned interior came on LT and above only, so on a WT or Custom the dash alone does not tell you.

The VIN settles it. Scan it in Partexia and see the key for that exact truck.

What kind of key is a Silverado? Key Access or Keyless Access

  • Key Access. GM's name for a truck you start with a key that you insert in the ignition and turn. The Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) transmitter locks and unlocks the doors.
  • Keyless Access (what most people call a smart key). The RKE transmitter stays in your pocket. With it inside, you start the truck with the ENGINE START/STOP button. Trucks with Keyless Access have a button on the outside door handles that locks and unlocks within about 1 m (3 ft) of the transmitter.

The Keyless Access transmitter holds a vehicle key for the door lock cylinder. If its battery is low, GM's manual says to place it in the transmitter pocket to start the truck.

GM's 2019 Silverado owner's manual covers both Key Access and Keyless Access trucks, so the model year alone does not tell you which one a truck has.

Which one yours takes is in the VIN. Partexia shows it, with the OEM key to order.

Silverado key fob upgrade: can a new fob add features?

No. Remote start and Keyless Access are factory equipment, listed in GM's owner's manual as "if equipped", and GM notes that only RKE transmitters programmed to the vehicle work. A fob with a remote-start button does not add remote start, and a truck with a key-turn ignition starts with a key you insert and turn.

Order the key that matches how the truck was built. Partexia reads that from the VIN.

Where is the VIN on a Silverado 1500?

  • Through the windshield: on the left front corner of the dash, readable from outside on the driver's side.
  • On the driver's door: on the certification label on the door edge or the door post.
  • On the vehicle registration and title.

In Partexia, point the camera at the VIN barcode or type the 17 characters.

For locksmiths: Chevy Silverado all keys lost

Before you quote, establish:

  1. The truck: on a 2019, LD or new truck; on a 2022, LTD or refreshed.
  2. The ignition: a key you turn (Key Access) or the ENGINE START/STOP button (Keyless Access).
  3. The features: what the customer's transmitter worked, such as remote start or the tailgate.
  4. The key tag: GM supplies a bar-coded key tag that a dealer or locksmith can use to make new keys, so ask the owner if they kept it.

Then scan the VIN in Partexia for the OEM key part numbers that fit that truck. Programming is a separate step, with your tool or at the dealer.

Chevrolet Silverado 1500 key questions

What key fob does a 2019 Silverado LD take?
It depends on which 2019 Silverado 1500 it really is. Chevrolet sold both the previous-generation LD and the all-new truck as 2019 models, so a fob listed for one is not automatically right for the other. Scan the VIN in Partexia to see the exact OEM key.
What is a 2019 Silverado LD?
The previous-generation Silverado 1500, the same generation as the 2014-2018 truck, kept in production for the 2019 model year beside the all-new truck until December 2019. Partexia tells the two apart from the VIN.
2019 Silverado 1500 vs 1500 LD: how do I tell which I have?
The LD was listed only as a Double Cab with a standard box, in work-truck and LT trims, and it looks like a 2018 Silverado. On a 2019 Double Cab WT or LT, scan the VIN in Partexia to be sure.
Does the Chevy Silverado have a smart key?
If it has Keyless Access, GM's name for it: there is a button on the outside door handles and an ENGINE START/STOP button inside. If you turn a key to start it, it is a Key Access truck. Scan the VIN in Partexia to see which key that truck takes.
What key type is a 2015 Chevy Silverado?
It depends on how the truck was built, so look for a key slot or an ENGINE START/STOP button first. GM's 2015 owner's manual describes an ignition key that you turn, with a Remote Keyless Entry transmitter if equipped. Scan the VIN in Partexia to see the OEM key and transmitter for that truck.
Can I upgrade my Silverado key fob to remote start or push-button start?
Not by buying a fob. Both are factory equipment, and a fob only works the features the truck was built with. Partexia shows the key that matches the truck's VIN.
What do I check first on an all-keys-lost Chevy Silverado?
Which truck it is on a 2019 or 2022 VIN, key-turn or push-button start, which features the old transmitter worked, and whether the owner kept the bar-coded key tag. Then scan the VIN in Partexia for the OEM key part numbers.
