Old vs new body style: two vehicles under one name

Some of the best-selling trucks and SUVs were sold as two different vehicles under one name in the same model year: the outgoing one beside the all-new one. Ram, Chevrolet, GMC, Jeep and Nissan all did it.

Order a key by year and model alone and you can get the one for the other vehicle. First find out which one you have.

Ram 1500 Classic vs new Ram 1500 (2019-2024)

From the 2019 through the 2024 model year, Ram kept building the previous truck as the Ram 1500 Classic (DS) beside the all-new Ram 1500 (DT).

  • Count the lug nuts on one wheel: five on the Classic, six on the new truck.
  • Look for the badge: Ram put "Classic" badges on the Classic's fenders.

Silverado 1500 LD and LTD vs the new Silverado (2019 and 2022)

For 2019, Chevrolet kept selling the previous Silverado 1500 as the 2019 Silverado 1500 LD beside the all-new 2019 Silverado, and GMC sold the previous Sierra as the 2019 Sierra 1500 Limited.

GM did it again for 2022: the Silverado 1500 LTD and the Sierra 1500 Limited carried the earlier truck into the 2022 model year until the refreshed 2022 trucks were built.

  • 2019: the Silverado 1500 LD came only with the 5.3L V8.
  • 2022: on an LT or higher, the refreshed truck has the large 13.4-inch touchscreen; the LTD keeps the earlier dash.

2018 Jeep Wrangler: JK or JL?

Jeep built the JK Wrangler until April 2018 beside the all-new JL, and sold both as 2018 models.

  • Look at the front fenders: the outgoing truck wears "Wrangler JK" decals.

2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee: WK or WL?

For 2022, Jeep sold the outgoing Grand Cherokee (WK2) as the Grand Cherokee WK, beside the all-new WL. The three-row Grand Cherokee L, from the 2021 model year, is already the new generation.

  • Look at the trim and engine: the 2022 Grand Cherokee WK came only as a Laredo E, Laredo X or Limited, with the V6. A 2022 Trailhawk, Overland, Summit, plug-in hybrid or V8 is the new one; a Laredo or a Limited can be either.

2014-2015 Nissan Rogue Select vs the new Rogue

When Nissan redesigned the Rogue for 2014, it kept selling the first-generation Rogue as the Rogue Select, beside the all-new Rogue, through the 2015 model year.

  • Look at the ignition: the Rogue Select's owner's manual describes a key you turn in the ignition switch, so a 2014-2015 Rogue with a push button ignition switch is the new Rogue.
  • Count the seats: the Rogue Select seats five; a third row means the new Rogue.

Why it matters for the key

Each pair is two generations of the vehicle, sold under one name and one year. A key listed for "the 2019 Ram 1500" or "the 2022 Grand Cherokee" may be for the other one.

Locksmith Ledger warns that "a lot of time and money gets wasted every year by locksmiths who assume that a vehicle uses the same transponder key as other vehicles made by the same manufacturer in that same year." Here it is the same name, too.

The VIN settles it. Scan it in Partexia to see which vehicle it is and the OEM key it takes.

Where to find the VIN

  • Through the windshield: on the driver's side of the dash, readable from outside.
  • On the driver's door: on the certification label on the door edge or the door post.
  • On the vehicle registration and title.

In Partexia, point the camera at the VIN barcode or type the 17 characters.

Old vs new body style questions

What is a 2019 Silverado 1500 LD?
The previous-generation Silverado 1500, sold for 2019 beside the all-new truck under the LD name. GMC's matching truck is the 2019 Sierra 1500 Limited. Partexia tells the two apart from the VIN.
What is the 2022 Silverado 1500 LTD?
The earlier Silverado, carried into the 2022 model year until the refreshed 2022 truck was built. Scan the VIN in Partexia to see which truck it is and its OEM key.
Is a 2018 Jeep Wrangler a JK or a JL?
It can be either: Jeep sold both as 2018 models. The JK wears "Wrangler JK" decals on its front fenders. Scan the VIN in Partexia to see the key for that exact Jeep.
Is a 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee a WK or a WL?
It can be either. The 2022 WK came only as a Laredo E, Laredo X or Limited with the V6, so a Trailhawk, Overland, Summit, plug-in hybrid or V8 is the new WL, while a Laredo or Limited can be either. Partexia tells them apart from the VIN.
What is a 2014 Nissan Rogue Select?
The first-generation Rogue, sold as the Rogue Select for 2014 and 2015 beside the all-new Rogue. Partexia tells the two apart from the VIN.
Do the Ram 1500 Classic and the new Ram 1500 take the same key fob?
Don't assume so. They are different generations of the truck, so a fob listed for one is not automatically right for the other. Scan the VIN in Partexia to see the exact OEM key.
